about

Driven Assault formerly known as KOMATOAST won Munsters Best Up and coming band with this track from their 01 demo

Driven Assault (né Komotoast) from Co. Clare made a positive impression last year with the debut demo under that former atrocious moniker.

The name isn’t the only thing that has changed on this latest demo though; the uptempo and energetic vibes of the last have now given way to a midpaced and very considered bludgeon, with the detuned guitars driving home each note in blunt force fashion.

It’s quite a surprising turn given their previous output, but the change has resulted in a much more broody and somehow angry listen. Opening akin to NI’s ever popular but defunct Spindrift with lower than usual metalcore throat abuse and a similarly pumping riff, the demo’s name isn’t the only thing reminding of the Belfast crew.

But even though the quality of the production and the apparent maturing of the band are laudable, I just cant shake the feeling that they should have varied the tempos just a little more.

Everything on this is more or less the same – a slow and deliberate stomp (and its a big stomp), except with nods to the likes of Raging Speedhorn and the like every so often. Truth be told though each song on this 4 track demo could easily be the next – there’s no real defining features like solos or vocal hooks to break the flow and give each song a real personality of its own.

On top of this there are a few minor timing issues between drum and guitar parts which niggle pedantic malcontents like myself. This demo gets the same mark as their last one then; they have quite obviously advanced and matured past their last effort, but at the same time they must now face a harsher examination of their work given their gathered experience and progression up the rungs.

Good then, but they need to spice it up a bit.
